The trail of the Eagles Nests is a chain of 25 medieval castles picturesquely located over the scenic landscape of the Krakow-Czestochowa Upland and is considered to be one of the best tourist trails in Poland.
If you are passionate about history and love medieval atmosphere you cannot miss visiting these castles.
The castles have been named the “Eagles Nests”, as most of them are located on large, tall rocks of the Polish Jura Chain. The castles date mostly to the 14th century, they were built to protect Krakow as well as important trading routes against the foreign invaders. Later, some of the castles passed on into the hands of various Polish aristocratic families. Many of the castles survived only in the form of picturesque ruins.
During this tour you will visit four of the 25 Eagles Nest Trails castles:
OJCOW CASTLE ruins which are located in the heart of the Ojcow National Park. Amazing Gothic gate carved in rock reminds fantasy tales and the nature surrounding will make you feel like you had stepped back in time and became a hero of the medieval legends.
RABSZTYN CASTLE* – nowadays scenic ruins feature outside walls up to the second and remains of the Renaissance gate. Please note that the access to this ruins requires climbing up the steep hill.
*In October Rabsztyn Castle is opened to the visitors only on Saturday and Sunday
OGRODZIENIEC CASTLE* – very well preserved ruins of the 14th century fortress. Later the fortress was replaced by the grand Renaissance castle-palace of Krakow’s powerful and fabulously rich Boner family. The castle was abandoned in 1810, but great deal of its fortifications, towers, and other structures can still be seen showing its magnificence.

**In October in case of snow or bad weather Ogrodzieniec castle may be closed to the visitors.
The castle in Bobolice was built by King Casimir III the Great in the middle of the 14th century, probably in place of an earlier wooden structure. In the nineteenth century in the castle was discovered a great treasure, and some believe that the main part of it has not yet been found. In the 21st century the Bobolice castle has been rebuilt and turned into a tourist attraction.
