Belzec Tour from Krakow – A Journey Through History

Discover the haunting history of Belzec, one of the most somber sites of the Holocaust, with a powerful tour of the Belzec Memorial and Museum. Located in eastern Poland, this former Nazi extermination camp is a testament to the inhumanity of the war and the lives lost in its wake. Our guided tour will take you through the camp’s history, providing deep insights into the tragedy that unfolded here.

Tour Highlights:

  • Visit the Memorial Site: Founded in 2004 as an extension of the Majdanek State Museum, the Belzec Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the victims of the Nazi concentration camp. The site is designed to memorialize the tragic events that took place here during the Holocaust.

  • The Cemetery and “Ramp”: The tour begins at the main entrance, located where the camp’s siding once stood. This area consists of two key parts: the “Ramp” and the Museum building, which together form the cemetery wall. At the end of the “Ramp” stands a powerful sculpture of a railroad track, symbolizing the arrival of deportees transported by train to the camp.

  • Poetry and Reflection: On the wall behind the sculpture, a fragment of a poem by Israeli poet Dan Pagis, “Written in Pencil in a Sealed Freight Car,” offers a reflective moment for visitors. The words poignantly capture the sorrow of the victims and the horror of their final journey.

  • The “Crevasse-Road”: As you walk along the “Road” leading to the “Crevasse,” you will pass through a crack in the earth that symbolizes the division between life and death. The narrow passage is marked by a cast-iron platform shaped like the Star of David, marking the boundary of a tragic history. The soaring walls evoke a deep sense of the enormity of the loss here, as the landscape itself bears the weight of the atrocity.

  • Ohel Niche – A Place of Reflection: At the end of the "Crevasse-Road," the granite wall bears a quote from the Book of Job, engraved alongside symbolic plaques bearing the names of the victims. This area, known as the Ohel Niche, provides a space for quiet reflection on the scale of the tragedy.

  • The “Stone Pile” and Names of the Deportees: The tour continues along a concrete path leading through the “Stone Pile,” where cast-iron plaques list the towns from which the victims were deported to Belzec. The trees standing on the site, known as the “Witnesses,” still grow in the area of the graves, preserving the memory of those who perished.

  • A Memorial Landscape: The gravesites are covered with metallurgical clinker, reflecting the unique terrain of the site and marking it as one of the largest and most significant mass burial sites in the world. The surrounding landscape, though tranquil today, echoes the horror of what occurred here.
